

Olive Wister Howell Kampmann (Fondly known as “Wissie” by many) was born on November 13, 1927 in the home of her grandparents in Navasota, Texas, delivered by her grandfather, Dr. S. J. Emory. She was named after both of her parents, Olive Emory Howell and Douglas Wister Howell and grew up in Bryan, Texas. Wister graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, and attended Hockaday Jr. College in Dallas for a year, followed by her sophomore year at the University of Arizona, where she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. She completed her BA in English at the University of Texas in Austin. In 1950, Wister married George Adams Kampmann, who had recently received his law degree. They, then, moved to San Antonio where they lived a happy 65 years together.
Wister was a member of the Junior League of San Antonio, the Fenwick Club, Timely Topics, the Battle of Flowers Association, The Assembly, and the Green Hand Garden Club. She particularly enjoyed the HemisFair era, serving as one of the VIP tour guides. Her favorite past times were keeping up with friends, especially her Friday Lunch Group, spending time at the family ranch, and fishing in Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Adams Kampmann, and older sister, Ann Howell Giraud. She is survived by two children: her son, George A. Kampmann, Jr., and his wife, Abigail and their daughters, Camilla Ann Kampmann and Elizabeth Olive Kampmann, and by her daughter, Ann Kampmann Schneider and her husband, Ernst. She is also survived by her sister, Ellen Howell Myers and her husband, William Allen Myers and their son, Webb Myers, wife Katie, and their children, Molly and Allen of San Antonio. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Douglas Wister Howell, Jr., and his son Douglas Howell, III, of Bryan.
In recent years, she has resided at The Towers. The family is forever grateful to Cheryl for her 49 years of loyal and dedicated service. And, to the wonderful caregivers that helped Wister in her final years of life.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 404 N. Alamo St., San Antonio, Texas 78205, on Friday, October 4, at 2:00 p.m.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Landa Library Branch of the San Antonio Public Library, Salvation Army, and First Presbyterian Church.
