He was a wonderful father and beloved by his five grandchildren. As a young man, Fernie was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, and eventually developing an interest in coin collecting. Fine foods and wines were among his many passions, along with rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Fernie and Maria also loved traveling to countries such as Mexico, Italy, France, England, and Brazil. He was an American history buff, visiting cities like Atlanta, New York, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Honolulu, New Orleans, Memphis, Washington, D.C., and the sites of several U.S. Civil War battles. He was a member of the Carpenters’ Union Local #944, serving as treasurer in 1973, and the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). He worshipped at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake Arrowhead, California.
