Reverend Gerard John McGuinness

Born in Glasgow, Scotland Fr. Gerry was schooled in England; He attended the London University graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, with Honors in Latin and Greek. In 1950, he entered the Seminary, Pontificio Ateneo Salesiano in Turin, Italy completing his studies in 1960 and was ordained Salesian Priest of Don Bosco, February 11, 1960 by His Eminence, Cardinal Fossati in Turin, Italy. After his ordination he taught Philosophy and Theology at Salesian Seminaries in England and Bethlehem, Jordan until 1968. From 1968-1978 he was a high school teacher and School Chaplain in England and Scotland. In 1983 Fr. Gerry was granted a transfer by the Holy See to the Diocese of San Bernardino where he was welcomed by Most Reverend Phillip F. Straling and incardinated in October 28, 1986. He served as associate pastor at St. Edward’s in Corona, St Catherine of Alexandria, Riverside and St. Mary’s in Redlands. He was Pastor at Blessed Sacrament, Twentynine Palms 1990-1996, at St. Vincent Ferrer, Sun City 1996-2002 and at St. Catherin of Alexandria, Riverside 2002-2004 until he retired due to health reasons.

He was preceded in death by his sister Isabel and is survived by his brothers, John and Pat; his sisters Bridie, Molly, Ann, Sister Agnes of the Salesian Congregation and Catherine.

In Celebration of Fr. Gerard McGuinness’ life and priestly ministry, there will be visitation, Thursday, December 29th, from 6:00-8:00 PM with Rosary at 7:00 PM at St Catherine of Alexandria in Riverside. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes on Friday, December 30th, at 1:00 PM at St. Catherine of Alexandria 7050 Brockton Ave in Riverside.
