The family of Melvin J. Messenger Jr. is saddened to announce his passing on March 3, 2026, at home, in Palm Springs, California. He was born in Santa Ana, California on November 13, 1940, to Melvin, Sr. and Bernice Messenger.
Mel brought the party. He will be lovingly remembered by his lifetime of jokes, one-liners, and humorous memories. He was voted “Most Mischievous” in his Pacific High senior year. In 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth, and was “connected at the hip” for 65 years.
A model family man, Mel was a devoted father to son, Mark, daughter, Michelle and their spouses Peter and Michael; a doting grandpa to David, Caitlyn, and Jacob; a proud papa to great-grandson, Harrison; and a loving brother to his sisters, Dannette and Lynn.
Mel attended Humboldt State University and earned a Professional Designation of Bank Management from UCLA. He was a 40 year career Banker, SPBQSA member and barbershop quartet baritone. He sang in his church choirs, including a concert at Carnegie Hall with the United Methodist Church of Palm Springs. He was an avid reader, a classic movie and theater enthusiast, a lover of travel and a skilled card player.
Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life at Montecito Memorial Park, 3520 Washington St, Colton, CA 92324, on March 30, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. They thank Amici Hospice and caregivers for their assistance, care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, share a joke in Mel’s honor and make a donation to your favorite charity.
