A successful businessman and investor, in retirement “AJ” had been active at UCSD and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, where he took a leadership role for many years. Additionally, AJ was the founder of the “Know It All” group that met monthly at a local LaJolla IHOP to discuss and solve the world’s problems, debating the issues of the day with a group of friends. The group met for over 20 years with AJ the cohesive force that kept the group together. He enjoyed classical music and theater. He read the New York Times every day, and at the time of his passing was deep into a book about dark matter in the universe.
A University of Chicago alumni, Mr. Schaps served in WWII as a meteorologist in China. When he returned to the US, he started a retail venture selling military clothing and goods. After then heading the HR department at a large insurance company for several years, he went out on his own again, he creating two successful retail chains in the Midwest; namely The Music Centers and the Americana Shops. He operated the latter enterprisewith his departed wife of 77 years, Florence.
A celebration of his life will take place in La Jolla this Spring when virus concerns can be minimized. Later this Fall he and Florence will be honored in the Chicago area, where they both were born, raised their family, and worked together. Their remains will be interred there next to the resting place of their beloved son, Robert Schaps.
AJ is survived by three of his four children, Eric, Richard, and Barbara, as well as ten grandchildren and fourteen of fifteen (and growing) great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by Florence, Robert, and his great-granddaughter, Danielle Schaps. A. Jack Schaps was one of a kind. He will be missed by many.
