Agaton Estrella Mateo Jr.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Agaton Mateo Jr., lovingly known as Jun, who left us peacefully on October 28, 2024, at the age of 84. A cherished resident of Rancho Penasquitos, San Diego California for over 35 years, Jun was a gentle soul whose laughter and kindness touched everyone he met.

Born on June 13, 1940, in Cavite City, Philippines, he was the youngest of nine children. Jun excelled academically, earning a degree in Chemistry from the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila. His remarkable career began at Esso in the Philippines also known as the Exxon Corporation where he relocated to Linden, New Jersey where he dedicated 28 years as a chemist before continuing his passion for education as a Lab Manager and Instruction Associate at Palomar College in San Marcos, California.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jun was a faithful member of the Iglesia Ni Cristo for over 40 years and a devoted family man. He held various offices in the Church. He was a choir member, head Secretary, and Deacon. His love for family was evident in his many roles as a husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind his beloved wife of over 60 years, Erlinda Mateo, and five children: Allan (wife Lea) Mateo of San Diego, Eleanor (husband Rey) Rubic of San Diego, Aries Mateo of San Diego, Ancel (wife Fhem) Mateo of Austin, Texas, and Elna (husband Raphael) Reggie of Lutherville, Maryland along with seven grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

Jun's passion for chemistry extended into his gardening, where he nurtured a vibrant array of vegetables, plants, and flowers for over 30 years. He was also an avid creator and collector, experimenting with candles and soap, collecting coins, and always ensuring that everyone was well-fed with his culinary delights. His other interests also included basketball, sports, singing and traveling.

As we remember Jun, we celebrate his generous gentle spirit, his unwavering love, and his infectious smile. He will be greatly missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
