LA JOLLA, CA – Barbara Honor Quick Hancock, 85, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2017 with her loving family by her side. Barbara was born to George and Gertrude Quick in Chisholm, Minnesota on August 4, 1932 and was raised in Hibbing, Minnesota. She had two brothers Bruce Quick (Lenore) of Hibbing, MN and Sargent Quick, deceased, and Sister Georgia Chamberlain of Chisholm, MN.
She graduated from Hibbing High School in 1950. Barbara graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1954 where she was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She met her husband, Richard B. Hancock, while at the U of M. The couple married on June 19, 1954 at the First Presbyterian Church of Hibbing. Barbara worked at the University of Minnesota hospital as a radiology therapist while her husband Richard attended dental school. They spent six and a half years in the US Air Force. While stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany their son Scott was born in 1959. Their daughter Diane was born in 1963 when the family had returned to the states, and was stationed in Los Angeles, California.
The family moved to San Diego. Barbara was a founding charter member of the University City United Church of Christ, active in University City Women’s Club, Curie Elementary PTA, Blue Bird leader and taught backyard swim. In 1971 the family moved to La Jolla. Barbara worked as the front office manager in her husband’s dental office. She was an active member of ΑΟΠ alumni, National Charity League, Explorer Scout Post 4, San Diego County Dental Society Alliance, Past President of the La Jolla Debutante Committee, and a Deacon at Torrey Pines Christian Church. She was an avid reader until she became blind from macular degeneration. Barbara was a gracious and generous loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a teacher of etiquette and tradition. She truly loved her family, Christmas, teddy bears, See’s chocolate, and entertaining.
Survived by her beloved husband Richard; son Scott Hancock; granddaughters, Rebecca and Ashley, daughter Diane Stratigopoulos (George); grandson, John (Meredith).
Services will be held Saturday, September, 30 at 3:00 p.m. at Torrey Pines Church, 8230 La Jolla Scenic Drive North. Private Interment at Miramar National Cemetery.
