Beatrice Ruiz Ramirez Aparis was born February 20 1917 in Oceanside, California. It was said that her mother, Librada Ruiz, living in Carlsbad at the time, was told to have her baby in Oceanside because there was a flu epidemic in Carlsbad where Beatrice grew up.
The Ruiz Family included Napoleon, Adrian, Arturo (Oscar), Amanda, Alfred, Eleanor (Babe), Rosa and Julio. We are told that there were many gatherings in Carlsbad that included Filipino men and that is why the Ruiz women married Filipinos. Sosimo Aparis married Beatrice in 1935 and purchased a home on Teak Street in 1940 for $2051.00. Although Sosimo passed away in 1975, Beatrice continued to live there for 73 years.
Beatrice had seven children, Sosimo Jr., Gilbert, Gaynell, Robert, Shirley, Daniel and Mary. Two step children, Rufina and Achilles who grew up in Panama. Fina visited San Diego over the years and later stayed with Beatrice for a number of years.
Beatrice worked as a waitress for a number of years in the late 1950’s. Also cared for a number of her nieces and nephew including Ernie, Margie, Vicky to name a few. Stories are that they loved staying and being with Auntie Bea! In later years Teak Street became a dwelling place for many grandchildren as they “found” themselves. She was always willing to help the kids and didn’t judge their behavior good or bad.
Beatrice was known for her tortillas that she always made. She would get up early in the morning, put on her radio and listen to Mexican music while she rolled her tortillas. You knew if you stopped by you could help yourself to a fresh hot tortilla.
Beatrice loved to go places and was always ready to go whenever anyone invited her. She went to family weddings in Ohio, South Carolina, Las Vegas and Hawaii. She traveled on an Alaska Cruise, went to Vancouver, Hawaii (again), Florida, Chicago. In later years, she enjoyed the waterfront, Coronado, San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Balboa Park and rose garden. And of course, many, many soccer, basketball, football, softball games for many great grandchildren. She witnessed countless baptisms, first communions, confirmations, graduations, etc.
At this time Beatrice has 28 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren, 11 great, great grandchildren…and one coming soon……
