Dr. Bonifacio Coloma Esperanza, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, cherished brother, and dedicated member of the community, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 2, 2023 in San Diego, CA. His passing has left family and friends with heavy hearts and profound loss.
Bonifacio was born in Rosario La Union, Philippines on November 30, 1941. His deep desire to positively impact the world and his determination and passion for learning led him to pursue a career in medicine. His graduation from Far Eastern University Medical School in 1967 marked the beginning of a lifelong journey helping those in need.
With dreams and aspirations, Bonifacio immigrated to the United States, hopeful of a brighter future. With deep gratitude and commitment to his newly adopted home, he became an American citizen. His commitment to service and pride for his country led him to join the Navy. He served more than 40 years. Through hard work and dedication, he ascended to the rank of Captain, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and commitment to his duties.
A dedicated physician, Bonifacio spent the majority of his life practicing medicine—doing primary care and minor surgery in San Diego. He worked in hospital, clinical, and private settings until the age of 80. He cared deeply for his patients, well loved by them and colleagues alike.
Together with his beloved wife, Salvacion, Bonifacio built a life full of love and shared dreams. Their union was blessed with seven children: Virginia (partner Greg Goodman), Audrey (who passed away in 2004 and with whom he is now reunited), Robert, Sylvia (husband John Tingzon), Elaine, David, and Jill (husband Jesson Nangpi). Bonifacio was a pillar of strength and source of inspiration to each of them, nurturing their growth and supporting their endeavors.
Bonifacio’s love extended to his nine grandchildren: Alexandra Zoe, Lucas Allen, Aidan Aubrey, Jonah Bonifacio, Jaydon Leonardo, Olivia Ann, Audrey Mila, Amelie Rhys, and Owen August. He cherished every single moment spent with them, creating everlasting memories and filling their lives with warmth and affection.
Bonifacio is preceded by: his parents, Teodoro and Francisca; his brothers: Reverend Father Placido Esperanza and Mariano Esperanza; and sister, Maria Salome Gapasin. Bonifacio is survived by his sisters: Presentacion Estebar, Salvacion Banaga, Helena Valera, and Teresita Crisologo. Their affection for him is a testament to the strong family bonds, still now connecting them.
Bonifacio loved to share the wonders of the United States with his family, embarking on memorable road trips to all fifty states and many national parks in the family van, usually following the routes he himself drew on maps. These adventures helped Boni create lasting bonds with his wife and children, passing down his love for discovery and exploration.
Boni was also passionate about collecting mementos and trinkets during these travels. From coins to hats, he created a tangible record of the places he’d visited—and always with a camera in hand! He fondly captured each moment with a smile on his face.
Bonifacio enjoyed singing in church, displaying deep faith and a connection to the community and ministry he openly embraced.
Boni was also an avid lover of music and movies, hobbies too that were passed on to all his children and grandchildren. Fond of buying CDs and DVDs, he amassed a vast collection of both during his lifetime. He had eclectic taste in music, and would often blast his stereo in the early morning hours, waking everyone in the house. And during the Holidays?! It was Christmas music all day, everyday! He loved watching movies at home with a fresh, warm bag of microwaved popcorn, inviting everyone to watch along with him. It was a favorite family pastime together.
Bonifacio also loved animals, owning a wide range of pets—dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and chickens—sharing his food with them whenever he felt like it.
Bonifacio’s absolute favorite place in the world was outside in his garden. His backyard was his pride and joy. He spent hours tending his plants, cultivating anything he thought would grow. His garden was not just a garden though; it was a piece of his heart and he nurtured it with care and dedication, a piece of himself that he shared with everyone.
Bonifacio’s legacy lives on through his family, his accomplishments, and the memories he created with all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, strength, generosity and unwavering loyalty will be etched forever in the hearts of those fortunate enough to be a part of his journey.
As we bid farewell to this beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, we find solace in the knowledge that he is now at peace, reunited with his daughter Audrey, parents, brothers, and sister. Bonifacio, you are forever in our hearts.
