Life and Legacy
Bruce J. Conyne was born November 27, 1931, in Bismarck, North Dakota, the son of Burt and Gertrude (Dunn) Conyne. He spent his early years in Center, North Dakota, until the age of seven, when his family moved to Bismarck. Bruce was active in school and attended Bismarck Junior College (later renamed Bismarck State College).
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953, and although he was scheduled to be deployed to Korea, the war ended with the signing of the armistice while he was in basic training. After completing training, his unit deployed to Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., Bruce attended the University of North Dakota on the G.I. Bill, where he earned his law degree in 1959.
Bruce married Eugenia (Jeanne) Anderson in 1958, in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. They moved to Maryland in 1965, where he began his career as an appellate lawyer for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C. He was an active member of the Maryland National Guard, where he achieved the rank of Colonel before retiring. In 1988, Bruce and Jeanne relocated to Cerritos, California. He worked in the Los Angeles office of the IRS as Chief of Appeals before retiring to San Diego in 1999.
