During his high school years, he attended Newark Technical High School and specialized in carpentry. Newark Tech did not have a sports program so to play both football and tennis he had to attend Central High School for their sports program after school.
It was at Newark Tech that he met his loving wife Penny of 36 years. Soon after, they had a beautiful daughter Natosha.
From a very young age, Carl was an innovator and very progressive thinker. He was always community based and extremely family oriented. His entire way of life was about always looking out for the next person and uplifting the black community. Everything he did was to bring all black people together to help them uplift their conscious mind and increase their self-worth.
When he was introduced to the Nation of Islam, he quickly knew that the Islamic faith shared his same ideals. He joined Mosque #25 in Newark New Jersey in 1985.
Due to the unfortunate loss of their beloved daughter Natosha in 1987. Carl and Penny decided to relocate to San Diego, California to begin their new life where they had four wonderful sons.
Once they arrived in San Diego, he immediately joined Mosque # 8. Shortly after, he took on the last name of Muhammad.
Carl was a family man and everything his children was involved in whether it was sports or music he was a mentor for all who were in his presence. For over 20 years Carl and Penny owned and operated Salaam Fish House and Isis Beauty and Barber Salons in the San Diego Community. These were just two places where he gave many opportunities to others to earn a decent living and gave people a starting point to go on to do better things for themselves in their lives.
Carl’s faith was his true motivation. He diligently brought together the aspects of both faith and business. He was always about the meeting of the minds, coming together and finding the best solution for problems. His home was always open to everyone in need. Countless people found solace and safety in his home. Carl always went the extra mile to make sure that he helped others understand their value in this life and make wise decisions that could uplift not just themselves but make things better for everyone. Carl was the first person to have the idea of renting out videos to spread the word of The Honorable Minister Louis Farakhan. Carl’s legacy is far reaching and will never be forgotten. Carl touched the hearts of many.
