Beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, friend. From his birth in rural Hunan, China to his final years in San Diego, California, he lived a full and colorful life, escaping the turmoil of war as a child to become a student and a scholar. He received his Ph. D. from Columbia University and became a researcher and professor of physics at the University of Maryland. Devoted to science and to his friends and family, he will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
