Cora is survived by her husband, Felixberto; her daughter, Theresa Thompson (Mark); her son, John Galasan (Tina); grandchildren, Rebecca Kadowaki (Brian), Katherine Thompson (Dawood), Cassidy Galasan, and Everest Galasan; and great-grandchildren Sophia, Leo, Lucy, Meera, and Vivienne; her sister Gloria Saulog (Theofilo), and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ladislao and Josefa, and 10 siblings.
Cora was born in Manila, Philippines, second to the youngest of a large family. She attended the University of the Philippines, Manila, and studied Music. After college, she temporarily put music aside and worked as a travel agent, dreaming of seeing the world. She met Felix on a blind date arranged by friends, and they married a few years later. Theresa was born shortly after.
Soon, Felix and Cora moved to Toronto, Canada, then Chicago, then Los Angeles, where John was born. The family eventually moved to San Diego, with a brief stay in Portland, Oregon.
While in San Diego, Cora was able to return to her love for music and became a piano teacher. Countless students took lessons and participated in yearly recitals, sometimes capped with a performance by the teacher. Cora also took a position with the government of the State of California while teaching piano in the evenings.
In her spare time, Cora traveled the world on pilgrimages to Mexico City, Lourdes, Fatima, Medjugorje, Rome, and the Holy Land. Her dream to see the world was fulfilled.
Cora was a devoted mom, “Lola,” and great-grandmother. She chronicled family life by taking hundreds of photos and created many albums and scrapbooks.
As the family moved around to different parts of the country, Cora deepened in her Catholic faith through active and dedicated involvement with the local churches. She taught religious education when her children were younger. She was a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion and brought the Blessed Sacrament to the homebound and hospitalized. She founded a Christmas Choir with friends that sang in the community to raise money for church programs and projects. She prayed with a Cenacle group from Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mira Mesa to uphold the community in faith.
Cora was known for her warm hospitality. After Masses, she took the time to greet visitors to the parish. She made many dear friends simply by saying, “Hello and welcome!”
The family is eternally grateful for the loving kindness of Ate Maricar and Cuya Gil as Cora’s health deteriorated. The family is also thankful for Cora’s dear church friends who made visits, brought meals, provided health advice, and upheld her in prayer. The family is also grateful for Cora’s caregivers who extended much patience in the last year.
