We welcomed a new member to the Chun family this year and hope to continue to share the memory of Dad in photos and stories throughout her lifetime as well.

Wow, I just found this googling Dexter's name.  I worked for him for a few years 1999 to 2002 maybe?  Really fond memories of him, taking our new Swedish friends from Ericsson to the beach to learn the learn surfing and going to Pizza Port after for beers.  Also trying to show him how ollie on a skateboard in the Ericsson parking lot.  And clueless trips to Sweden trying to figure out what we doing.  Such a nice guy, and so sad to hear this.

I just heard about this terrible news through a friend :(. What a loss for all of us and my condolences to family and friends! Dex was such a gentleman and he stood out in a crowd through his humility and kindness! 

As a young engineer, I learned a quite lot of things from him - The one trait that will always stick with me is that he will make himself heard in a tech crowd through his logic, active listening, and calm nature rather than the norm of louder arguments. 

I will always cherish his memories fondly whether debugging sessions or discussing technology or day-to-day life activities during business trips. My first international business trip was with Dex and a few other dear colleagues to Japan. I do not think I have had a more memorable trip than that. 

Always brings a smile whenever I come across Dex in the building lobbies. Dex was a special person and will be dearly missed.  He loved his girls and family and I wish them all the best.

I met Dexter when I was 10yrs old when I first moved to Hawaii from Japan . He lived several houses away, but he attended a school in another district, so we didn’t quite hang out with each other during our childhood, but when summer came we were like brothers we practically hung out everyday fishing, and camping in his backyard just looking for some fun everyday. Dexter was always a inelegant and playful, is what kind a kept us friends. After we graduated from high school we went on our own way, and haven’t seen each other like strangers, but Dexter will always remain in my heart as one of my best friends I ever had, and one of the most interesting friend I ever had. He also have a very nice family that lives in my heart along with him. See ya Dexter, next time around.  Friends eternally Shogo.

I was saddened upon hearing of Dex's passing.  I was fortunate to know Dex when we started working at TRW out of college in 1985 along with Ken Wiseman, Jim Lew, Alan Yee and a few others.   He was one of the nicest guys who was always willing to help others.  Though I hadn't seen him in the several years since we both left TRW, I will always enjoy the conversations we had about Hawaii and remember the good times we shared during our time at TRW.

To Candace, the Chun and Fujimoto families, I am so sorry for your loss.  Like Gregg, it has been a long time since I’ve seen Dex.  However, the memories are vivid and full of laughs and smiles.  Dex was good at all things local, he could shred the waves, he could rock the acoustic guitar, and he was as laid back and mellow as Hawaii can be.  Many memories…  beach days (including the epic Rabbit Island paddle), Fujimoto house, party at park in Kuliouou, acoustic guitar jams with C&K and Kalapana tunes, dirt biking, Rush concert, Ernest and Daredevil Dave. When I entered the U of Hawaii EE school as a Freshman and took my very first EE class, EE120 Digital Logic, Dex was a grad student TA for the lab part of the class.  It was an alternate universe to run into Dex there.  I remember being in a lab session with him, seeing him help my classmates with the humility but clear competence that is described by his Qualcomm coworkers here on this page.  Due to our past in our other world, I was embarrassed to ask, but he did help me debug my final project breadboard, and gave me some friendly teasing over finding my misplaced wire.  I was impressed; Dex was not just the all star local guy that I partied and hung out with, but a crack engineer and a teacher.  Inspiration.  

I was, for all these years, looking forward to someday reuniting with Dex in Hawaii and with the HiKaiBoys, reliving some of our good times from long ago.  Dino, get the pictures ready, we need to do that anyway.  Dex, you are and will be missed!  


Dex passing is a Thunderclap from a clear sky. Dex had a upbeat, smiling attitude. During discussions Dex short, thoughtful, smart remarks delivered the message like a breeze of fresh air.

My condolences to Dex's family.

I have known Dex since I joined Qualcomm many years ago, and have worked closely with him over the years. Dex had a unique perspective of post-silicon/VI and architecture; something I have learnt to appreciate through people like him. His intuition and experience, and the ability to blend both and parse the story was a huge strength for the team.

I've enjoyed many trips with Dex, a lot of fun memories. He was always about moderation and staying healthy - it is hard to make sense of what has happened.

Godspeed to the nicest, friendliest colleague, always ready to help and have fun. 

He always volunteered to take on a challenge, then proceeded to see it through with his unmistakable chill attitude.

My deepest condolences to Dexter's family.

I worked with him very briefly for about 6 months in 1995-96.  I had just joined Qualcomm (CBS) and used to visit San Diego for long spells.  Dexter was one of the bright spots in the Q110 lab – I was very new to Qualcomm and he was always there, smiling, supportive, ready to teach and help.

Some people leave an impression even if the interaction is brief.  He was one of those people.

May he rest in peace.  


I am so sad about Dex's sudden passing.  My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Candace, their daughters, the Chun family, and the Fujimoto family that he married into.  
Although I haven't seen Dex in the many years since he moved from Oahu, I have such fond memories of our surf sessions during our college years and, of course, hanging out at the Fujimoto home (the gathering place).   I'll never forget the time when Dex, Dave, Gary, and I paddled all the way out to Rabbit Island to catch waves.  Gary and I don't recall how Dex convinced us to do that 3/4 mile paddle (each way) on boogie boards, but I will hold onto that as one of my best surf memories ever.  True, we were young & ___ in our college years, but even way back then Dex was calm, cool, collected, easy-going, trustworthy, dependable,...so if Dex was gonna paddle all the way to the island, of course, we would join him.  Extremely few people can claim to have surfed Rabbit Island and even fewer can claim to have gotten there without a boat.  
Thanks for the memories, Dex.  You will certainly be missed.  Rest in peace and love, my friend. 

I learned many things from Dex. Perhaps most valuable are those relating to how to be a good citizen. I will continue my daily scan of the Del Mar break. He’s usually there somewhere. Steve R

The memorable trip I remember was to Japan/Korea more than 10 years ago with Anand and our dear friend Sumiyoshi-san that will always be cherished.. With Anand constantly stopping to grab coffee and never being on time to our meetings contrasting our very punctual Sumiyoshi-san... I remember the laughs that Dex and I had and will severely miss him.

This is very unexpected and sudden....
Even though, my interactions with Dexter started 3 years ago at Qualcomm, in that relatively brief period, he had impressed me most not only as a gifted engineer, but more importantly, as a laid back, easy going, humble human being. He always had a smile on his face.

Truly Dex was one of a kind!! A calm but full of energy, simple but most effective, a great listener with views from a totally different angle. It was a great privilege to work with Dex over last decade or so. Will miss Dex's physical presence in our meetings and trips, but will cherish all the good memories we had in the past.

I know Dex the first week I joined Qualcomm back in '96.  He was such a kind and patient mentor for me throughout my early years. While working with Dex over the many years, I found him one of the most relaxed, easygoing engineers.  We both got in early when nobody else was around and had many one-on-one chats.  I found him always willing to help -- either technically or personally.  He had integrity, was honest, fair and patient with everyone around him.  I will miss him greatly. I am really shocked and deeply saddened to hear this news. I really enjoyed working with Dexter. Aside from his technical depth and breath, Dex was kind to help others, he guided me to become an inventor and now I can help others.

There are many talented inventors I worked with at Q.  But none of them had Dexter's smile and wit.  He never spoke loudly at any meeting, but everyone listened when he spoke.  And he could explain anything to anyone.

You can see from the photo posted that we would all go to Korea wearing our suit jackets - Dex might show up in a T-shirt and jeans but command the complete respect of all the top engineers and execs we were visiting.

I met Dex when I joined Qualcomm in 1994. He was the smiling happy face at the end of the hallway.  During my latter years at Qualcomm I had the honor, truly the honor, to work with him and travel with him.  He was a brilliant person, but much more importantly he was a good person, an honorable person, with a heart of gold.  It was my privilege to call him, “friend”.  Dexter I feel your loss and will honor your memory. Godspeed on your journey into the undiscovered country. You are missed.     

I am deeply saddened by the news of Dexter's death.  It is hard to accept it as real.  I have worked with Dex for a number of years now and it has always been such a joy.  Aside from his technical strength, it was really his calm and easygoing nature that made Dex stand apart.  In an environment of strong opinions, Dex was the cool and steady dude who brought Balance to the Force.  I admired him for this, and will miss him dearly in our team.

I'm so sorry for your loss -- our loss.  Dex was such a kind and easy-going friend.  He made everyone around him at ease and capable of more.

Full of energy and open to the world, he was one of the most awesome people to travel with.. smart, helpful, easy to laugh, and a great listener.   Dex was never one to shy away from walking the long distance, climbing all the stairs, or trying something new.

His paper-and-pen style was a rare treat, his full attention and thought on whatever challenges we faced at work.  His quest for the best bowl of Ramen,  quick-draw pocket camera, shopping Tokyo for souveniers for his girls, or just catching the right subway -- these were the things that made all the inconveniences of travel forgettable.

I'm so sad he is gone, and cherish the time and adventures we shared.

I have known Dexter for close to 20yrs through our time at work.  I always connected with Dexter through his kindness, friendly attitude and always willing to help out.   Hearing of his sudden loss really hit me hard knowing how much I enjoyed working with him.

I feel very sad and shocked at this loss. I have known Dex since 1995. We have worked together at Qualcomm and at Ericsson. We have gone on business trips together to Sweden. Dex was sharp and technically very capable. Very pragmatic. What I remember the most is what a nice, pleasant guy he was. Always with a smile. He was a surfer too and I admired that balanced personality. Vivid, pleasant, memories with him! My sincere condolences and support for the family.

I have known Dex for almost 20 years at Qualcomm. He was an incredibly talented engineer and an amazing human being. Soft spoken, kind and warm in every conversation we have ever had. He will be sorely missed as a friend and a colleague.

Hi Candice and the rest of the Dexter Chun family,

Sorry about the shocking news. I have worked with Dex since out of college in 1985.  I fondly remember the days of you and Dex  and the dogs joining us camping in the sierra nevada mtns.  Dex always took care of others including me.  Last year he told me to take care of myself and the family and make sure i am healthy.  This had nothing to do with him but instead others.  That was Dex.  Let me know if you need anything.

Dex was the person, I could stop by,  chat, hang out and go for coffee or walk around campus.  We chatted about everything from the future of memory to next gen tech/stocks and life...He was the one person who enjoyed street food in all our overseas trips and was always the surfer cool dude ...will miss him so much and all our chats.
