He is survived by his wife, Anne Jane Winfield, after 65 years of marriage,
six children, 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
The Lord blest Frank and Anne with six treasured children and their
families. Carol & Nelson Marshall of Chesterfield, VA; Kevin Winfield &
Rose Marie Battaglia of Morro Bay, CA; Brian & Nicki Winfield of Carlsbad;
Kenneth & Karen Winfield of Carlsbad; Elizabeth & Nick Piantanida of
Colorado Springs, CO; and Francis & Nanci Winfield of San Diego.
He was born to Francis L and Julia R Winfield in Bridgeport, CT in 1928
and lived his early years in Stratford and West Haven, CT. He was
preceded in death by his 5 siblings: Thomas Winfield, Elaine Arena, Jane Danaher, Ronald Winfield and
David Winfield. While attending West Haven HS, Frank was a four letter man in
athletics and accrued eleven Varsity letters in four different sports. Upon
graduation from HS, Frank was offered a professional baseball contract
with the Brooklyn Dodgers but rather accepted an appointment to the US
Military Academy.
Upon graduation with the Class of 1951 from West Point, Frank was
commissioned in the Artillery Branch of the US Army. Soon he was
ordered to Germany and spent three years there. During his final year, he
met Anne J O’Brien, a graduate of Fordham University and school teacher
with the Department of the Army. Upon return to the States, they were
married at West Point in1955.
Numerous postings followed to Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Korea, New
York, Colorado, Kansas, Panama, South Carolina, Vietnam and Virginia.
Altogether he served during WWII, Korean Conflict and in the Vietnam war
with 24 years of active duty. He attained the rank of LT Col and was
awarded numerous decorations.
Upon his retirement in 1974, the family moved to San Diego’s Scripps
Ranch. He received his MBA from National University with distinction in
1976. He served as Director of Business at Cal Western School of Law, VP
at William Lyon University, and teamed up with Anne in her Asset flooring
business. He also worked with his good friend, Fred Oliver, in real estate
and property management.
Frank was involved with his Catholic Parish, St Gregory the Great, serving
as a Eucharistic Minister, Charter member of Pastoral and Finance
Councils, and a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was
a member of the West Point Society of San Diego, serving as President for
two years. In later years, Frank was honored by his home town of West
Haven, CT, by inducting him into it’s Hall of Fame for his achievements in
baseball.
Frank was an amazing husband, father and grandfather and was loved and
cherished by all his family. He was an avid sports enthusiast and shared
this enthusiasm with all those he loved. He was a man of discipline, loyalty
and generosity. He recognized the goodness in everybody and loved his
Lord and adhered to the principle of “Duty, Honor and Country” which is
the West Point motto.
There will be a viewing at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon
Rd, SD, 92121 on Sunday, February 14th:
Private family viewing 12:00-12:15pm;
All others from 12:15pm to 2:00pm
A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held at St Gregory the Great,
11451 Blue Cypress Drive, SD, 92131 on Monday, February 15th at 10:00
AM (Pacific Standard Time). The church asks that no flowers are brought to the Mass. The funeral
Mass will be live streamed on the St Gregory the Great website at
STGG.org (https://stgg.org/welcome/mass/). It can be streamed live during the mass or at a later time.
The burial will follow Mass at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll
Canyon Rd, SD, 92121 at 11:30AM. All events will take place outdoors.
