SAN DIEGO, CA: La Vida Del Mar resident, Gwendolyn Louise Johnson, passed away on July 19, 2014, at the age of 86. Known for her quick wit and brilliant storytelling, Gwen lived an active and full life until an unfortunate fall resulted in her death.
Gwen was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts on February 22, 1928, the daughter of Howard Austin Glazer and Gertrude Louise (Andrew) Glazer. In 1945, Gwen was admitted to the United States Cadet Nurse Corps, graduating in 1948 as a Senior Cadet. One year later, she was commissioned as a Navy Ensign in nursing and continued a full military career for 20 years before retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1969.
Gwen was married in 1952 to John Beretta, a Navy pharmacist. Their dual Navy careers resulted in many exciting assignments and travel experiences. After a lengthy tour of duty in Japan, Gwen developed a lifelong love of the culture which was reflected in her collection of art and her choice in design for all of her residences.
Gwen returned to San Diego after John's death in 1976. She resided in Rancho Bernardo, California where she was well-regarded for her volunteer work on behalf of the Catholic church. Gwen was known for her impeccable taste and drive for perfection. She was a voracious reader with a brilliant recall of detail. Those skills served her well when she developed a passion for bridge and an appreciation of the friendships she made playing the game.
In 1981, she married Cleon Johnson, her neighbor and fellow bridge enthusiast. They shared many happy years as a couple enjoying the numerous group activities associated with living in a senior community. Gwen also became the matriarch of the Johnson Clan, consisting of Cleon's three daughters, eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She was a memorable addition to the family. Gwen's death is a significant loss to all who had the opportunity to know her.
Gwen had no living heirs, though she was an irreplaceable part of the Johnson family. She is survived by her three stepdaughters, Jerri Grady, Judi Panton, and Janice Johnson, and their respective families.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on August 7th at St. James Catholic Church in Solana Beach. She will be buried at Miramar National Cemetery with full military honors.
