Harold Chen, M.D., passed away with his family by his side at his home in San Diego, CA on Saturday, July 10, 2021. Harold was born as You Chen Chen on July 27, 1933 in I-lan, Taiwan. He attended medical school at National Taiwan University. During his 50+ year medical career as a professor and pediatrician specializing in genetics and birth defects, Harold worked with several medical schools and hospitals, including Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, and LSU Medical School/Center and Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport, Louisiana. Harold put his life's work into three editions of his Atlas of Genetic Diagnosis and Counseling textbooks written for medical professionals. He helped countless children and their families in his illustrious career as a physician and will be missed by many... especially by his family.

Harold was a man of great intellect, but also had many hobbies and interests through the years: Chinese chess, softball, bowling, photography, golf and mahjong. He and his wife, Chuhwei, traveled extensively throughout the world, both as a couple, as well as with their family. His greatest joy was spending time with his family - traveling, playing cards, or simply sharing a meal. He was kind, compassionate, and generous - the best husband, father, and grandfather to his family.

Harold is predeceased by his parents- A Kung Chen and A Chieng Huang Chen. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Chuhwei Chen; his children - Kathy (James) Huang, Karen (Eric) Green, Ada (Craig) Kaiser, Eric (Amanda) Chen; his grandchildren - Meagan (Finn) Carlsvi, Jessica (Mark) Guyler, Samantha (Michael) White, Maddison Green, Alex Kaiser, Matthew Kaiser, Jacob Chen, Lauren Chen; and his great-granddaughter, Brianna Carlsvi.

Good-bye to uncle Harold
(再見了, 陳友珍醫師 - 我的追悼)

Uncle Harold, 我生命中的貴人, you were a man of significance in my life. Please allow me to itemize.

1. You brought me to USA
45 years ago, you sponsored me to USA. In 1976, I went to the immigration office with your income statement and your sponsor paper. During visa interview, immigration officer said, your income is very high, and your recommendation is well accepted.

2. You transformed me, as I were born again
You named me Steve, you gave me my 1st car, Oldsmobile cutlass, which is now my answer to Internet security question, and aught me how to drive, you chose accounting for me. You told me accounting is easy, but CPA practice is not. I therefore went for it at full speed. 13 years later in 1989, I opened my own CPA firm in Atlanta, Ga, serving the Asian business community.

The practicing life is so rewarding that makes me realize your wisdom. As professor to one of his students, you once told me that My performance has exceeded your expectations.
That is my biggest complement in life.

3. You support me, care for me and give me a family sense in this country
During Christmas and thanksgivings , my whole family drove to your house for holiday. Once in 1977, my wife was sick, you drove from Detroit to Cincinnati, 4 or 5 hours one way to take her to your hospital for treat. I will never forget that.

4. Your most love, your wife, Cheryl ChiHwei
Leaving her behind is your most worry. Uncle Harold, no need to worry about her.
I will respect her, as I respect you.
I will treat her, as my own big sister.

5. Good bye
So much I say here to you, uncle Harold. You may or may not hear me, but every word I said is true.

Now is the time to say good bye. Good bye, uncle Harold, have a good journey of your own to heaven. Soon or later, I will go find you, stay next to you, and be your student and your lieutenant again.

So sad I am, here, I cannot help it but cry, because I am losing you.

I will always remember Uncle Harold as a very wise man, and how he made the diagnosis of genetic pediatric abnormalities look so easy ! I was lucky enough to stay at your house in Shreveport with your family , and do rounds with Uncle Harold at LSU Hospital as a medical student . I still have his textbook ! Min and I will always be grateful that Aunt Chuhwei and Uncle Harold were able to attend our wedding in Australia in 2002. He will be sorely missed by many!
