Herbert Kenneth Schnall passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 23, 2026 after living a long and full life of 97 years. He was surrounded by many members of his surviving family in a circle of love, song and prayers shortly before he passed away. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Annabel Halpern Schnall and his sister Judith Somerstein. Herbert is survived by his two children, Linda Schnall Singer and Steven Schnall, along with his wife Andrea Lambert. He had five grandchildren: Michael Singer, Andrew Singer, Megan Singer Mayer, David Schnall and Shai Schnall. He also had six great-grandchildren, ranging in age from 3 weeks to 13 years old.
Herb was a publishing executive for Parents Magazine, New American Library (the publisher of Signet, Mentor, Plume and Signet Classic paperbacks) and Times Mirror Magazines. At Signet, he published many books by Stephen King, Norman Mailer and Love Story by Erich Segal. He began his career as a certified public accountant for Peat Marwick Mitchell, now KPMG. He is a Phi Beta Kappa alumni of Lehigh University.
Throughout his life, Herb maintained key friendships including high school friends, fraternity brothers, business colleagues, his late-in-life travel companion Harriet Schuman and the many other people he met in his post-retirement life. He was active in the Jewish community, volunteered at the San Diego Zoo, and most notably, was a past president and honoree of Alzheimer’s San Diego.
His family remembers him most for his love of family, good food, wine, travel, sports, politics and music. He was charismatic, had a wide variety of interests and a contagious love of life. He will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s San Diego or Lightbridge Hospice.
