Joan was born in Norton, Kansas to Lena and John Cox. The family moved to California in 1941 where she and her sister, Bonnie, attended Beverly Hills High and UCLA. It was at college that Joan met and married J. Richard McKenna, with whom she shared 57 years. They raised five children in Los Angeles and Oregon before settling in San Diego in 1984. Widowed in 2007, Joan spent the last seven years at Merrill Gardens where she continued an active social life. She is survived by her sons Michael (Marlene), and Scott (Lori), and daughters, Sandi, Kim (Alan), and Janice (Steve), 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, four nieces and two nephews.
