John Maurice was born in Grand Haven, Michigan, on April 13th, 1929. His parents were John Joldersma and Julia Amelia Joldersma. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Hope College in Michigan, and later, received a Master’s Degree from Pepperdine University in Southern California.
John was a Military Veteran who served in the United States Navy as a Medical Corpsman during the Korean War. He then became a teacher and taught Biology for 33 years at Point Loma High School. He loved the outdoors, camping, hiking and backpacking, and was devoted to the Boy Scouts of America. He had been a member of the organization for most of his life, since he was twelve years old, and became an Eagle Scout himself in 1947, and went on to lead various Scout troops in the Ocean Beach, Clairemont and Pacific Beach areas of San Diego. He was also a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Pacific Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Donna Joldersma, three daughters, Jennifer Angel-Thorn, Joanne Ritter and Jodie Joldersma, as well as two grandchildren, Joseph and Ariana Angel.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service with military honors will be held for him at a later date, which is yet to be determined.
