September 1,1934-April 5,2025
John Sebastian Salcido, affectionately known as “Papa John,” passed away peacefully at the age of 90 surrounded by his children. A devoted father, grandfather, veteran, and public servant, John led a life defined by integrity, perseverance, and a deep love for his family.
John Salcido was born on September 1, 1934, in Tucson, Arizona, to Juan and Rita Salcido. He was the fifth of eleven children. John spent his early years on the now-historic Canoa Ranch, where, despite a humble upbringing, he was surrounded by love, hard work, and strong family values that shaped the man he would become.
At 17, John made the courageous decision to forgo high school graduation and enlist in the United States Air Force. He served honorably from 1952 to 1956. Following his military service, John was accepted to the University of Arizona. Though he had not completed high school, he distinguished himself academically and graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Public Administration, earning high praise from the Dean of Students. He was the first of his family to attain a college degree, a milestone treasured deeply.
After completing his education, John relocated to San Diego, California, where he embarked on an impactful career in public service, starting as a social worker, then becoming a probation officer, and later promoted to Federal Probation Officer, guiding many individuals toward better paths. He retired from probation work at the age of 55, only to begin a second career as a counselor in the jail system- a role he fulfilled with passion and purpose for another 10 years.
For over 20 years, John opened his home to foreign exchange students from around the world. These experiences created lifelong connections, and many of the students became like family. Through them, the Salcido family shared in new cultures, traveled widely, and built enduring relationships that enriched their lives.
John will be lovingly remembered for the many stories he shared, often around the dinner table or during cherished Thursday night cocktails. He loved to talk about his family, work and of course, politics. A man of strong principles, John never hesitated to speak his mind. He was proud, disciplined, and deeply committed to his values. He placed great importance on his health, maintained a balanced diet, and remained active -walking 5 miles every day.
He was known for his great smile, smooth dance moves and fiery spirit. To his family, he was their pillar of strength, a constant source of unconditional support, and a man that they all admired and loved deeply. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
John is survived by his son, John Salcido, and daughter-in-law, Amber Salcido; their sons, Jace and Weston; his daughter, Kelly Salcido, and her fiancé, Anthoni Bravo; and his children, Ava and Jackson. His living siblings, Tillie, Grace, Delphine, Rosemary, Mary and Yolanda.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
