Lillian was born in Richmond Hill, New York on April 11, 1926, to Theodore and Alice (Stack) Abbene.
She met her husband Frank Volanti of Fresno, California, during WWII. He was in the Army Corp of Engineers and her Uncle Rob who was in the same unit. The two corresponded throughout the war years and married on April 12, 1947. They were married 54 years until Frank’s death in 2001.
She remarried in 2007 to John McCoy, a childhood friend and elementary school classmate. They were married 2 ½ years until John’s death in 2010.
Between 2010 and 2021 she lived in Fresno, San Marcos, and San Diego, where each location allowed her to be close to different family members.
Her husband Frank Volanti, her daughter Laurie Volanti Howard, her second husband John McCoy, and her brother Michael Abbene, have all predeceased her.
She is survived by her sister, Marie Keeney of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; two sons, John Volanti of San Diego, Bob Volanti, and his wife Tina of Fresno;
3 grandchildren, Robby Volanti of Fresno, Cortney Howard of Salem, Oregon and Jenny Volanti of Fresno. She had 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
During her life she was a homemaker raising three children, but enjoyed her work outside the home as secretarial support in radio advertising, the building trades, labor relations, real estate and law. She was the first Librarian for Queen of the Valley Catholic High School in the late 1960’s. She also later worked as an Escrow Officer and a Legal Secretary. She enjoyed gardening, travel, music and baking and was an avid knitter.
Lillian died of complications of Covid-19 on January 31, 2021 in San Diego, California. She was 94 years old.
The family would like to acknowledge her caregivers at Sunrise of La Jolla for all the help, love and tender care they gave her. In addition, the family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff at Kaiser Medical Center San Diego (Unit 4 South) who made her last hours ones of peace and comfort.
A funeral mass will be conducted on Wednesday, February 10th at St. Brigid Parish in Pacific Beach. A private graveside service will be held on February 15th at the Fresno Memorial Gardens in Fresno. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name to a charity of your choosing.
