February 22, 1924 - January 9, 2022
Lorraine Hynek was born in St. Louis, MO in 1924 to a large, loving family that originated in Bohemia. Lorraine served her country as a Navy WAVE during WWII where she met then married Paul I. Wright. After Paul’s retirement from the Navy, they returned to San Diego to raise their three daughters, Kathleen, Janet, and Michelle. Lorraine was the consummate volunteer while her girls where in school and continued her efforts with her grandsons. She served many organizations including Holy Spirit Church and School, Rosary High School, Girl Scouts, Meals-on-Wheels, and St. Pius X School.
Lorraine loved God, country, family, church, neighbors, and pretty much everyone she met. All were welcome in her home with no chance of anyone ever leaving hungry. A life-long adventurer, she loved to travel especially on road trips with her “little sister” Bernice with a memorable jaunt to Maui for Lorraine’s 95th birthday. Lorraine was proceeded in death by her parents John & Dorothea Hynek; siblings Marie, Dorothy, John, Betty, Marguerite, and Ray; husband Paul; and daughter Janet. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Kathleen & Richard Vanesian and Michelle & Augie Gomez; grandsons Michael and Thomas Gomez; great-grandsons Addison and Bryce Gomez; sister & brother-in-law Bernice & Norman Raaf; 3 generations of nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends across the country.
A celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held on March 23, 2022, with Mass at 9:00 am at Holy Spirit Church, 2725 55th Street, San Diego, CA followed by a 11:30 am Memorial Service at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, 1700 Cabrillo Memorial Drive, San Diego, CA 92106.
