
Maria was born on May 21, 1943, in San Diego, California, and grew up in the Kensington neighborhood. She earned her undergraduate degree as an English major and later graduated from West Virginia University with a Master’s degree in Social Work. She spent her career as a social worker in San Diego, where she dedicated herself to helping families and supporting her community.
Maria loved reading, was an avid tennis player, and enjoyed good food and traveling to interesting places. She collected art and artifacts from around the world, reflecting her curiosity and appreciation for culture. Known for being honest, direct, and possessing a witty sense of humor, she maintained deep and meaningful relationships with family and many close friends throughout her life.
She was an active member of the La Jolla community, participating in clubs and local events, and remained engaged and connected over the years. Family was extremely important to Maria. She took great care in preserving family stories and artifacts so they could be passed down to future generations.
She was married to Stephen Clarkson of La Jolla from 1978 until his passing in 1999. They shared many happy years together and a deep, enduring love.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Emma Tando (1985) and Norma Wood (2012), her mother Graciela Morales (1965) and her father Alberto Morales (2001).
Maria is survived by her sister Julie Hileman; her nephews and nieces Javier A. Vaca, Eric Vaca, Rick Tando, Evan Tando, Heather Clarkson, Kimberly Hirschi, and Edward Clarkson III; her cousin Linda Morales; and her seventeen grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Following the graveside service, a reception will be held at the same venue from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
