Marilyn Smale was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1936; she and her husband, Frederic Metcalf, met as neighbors in Oak Park and started dating when they were 15 years old. They have been enjoying their wonderful journey together for 72 years, being married for 66 of those years.
Marilyn and Fred were parents to two children, Karen and Tom, and Marilyn spent most of her time being an incredible mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She and Fred lived in Riverside, CA for 42 years...before that, they lived in Silver Spring, MD, and after that, they lived on their boat in Ft. Myers, FL for ten years. After moving on-shore in Ft. Myers for a bit, they shifted west to San Diego, where they eventually ended up at Vi at La Jolla Village, a retirement community not far from their daughter and son-in-law's home.
Marilyn did various volunteer work, mostly at Planned Parenthood, and also worked as a psychometrist for a number of years. She focused more, though, on her family...up until the very end of her life, family was her main interest. She adored each of her six grandchildren and their spouses, as well as all ten (soon to be eleven) great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her very loving family:
Her husband, Fred;
her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mark Swartz;
her grandchildren and their spouses - Scott and Haley Swartz; Eric and Nicole Swartz; and Andrea and Corey Elliott;
her great-grandchildren - Ryan, Derek and Colin Swartz; Connor and Kody Swartz; and Leo, Max, Jack and soon-to-arrive baby girl Elliott;
her son, Tom, pre-deceased her; she is survived by the mother of his children, Janet Biggs;
her grandchildren and their spouses - Shannon and Michael Haney; Alyssa Metcalf; and Keri and Jacob Todd;
her great-grandchildren - Arriya Haney and Olivia Todd;
her younger sister, Joan Stewart, pre-deceased her; she is survived by her youngest sister and husband, Carol and Lou Bone; her sister-in-law, Jean Wortman; and her nieces and nephews.
Everyone will desperately miss her kindness, wisdom and amazing smile...but all will carry her love forever.
