For those fortunate enough to know Maureen, she was a vision of positivity, radiating kindness and warmth. Always dressed in vibrant colors and wearing a welcoming smile, she brought joy wherever she went. With a beautiful voice, she often broke into Irish song or could be found singing along at Sacred Heart’s Sunday Mass. She was the first to join and the last to leave the dance floor, truly a ray of sunshine in every room she entered. Her deep compassion for others shone throughout her life—whether volunteering at Houston’s Medical City Medical Center, caring for aging family members, or offering steadfast support to her many dear friends in Coronado.
Born in Bagenalstown, Ireland, Maureen emigrated to Boston, MA, in 1963 to join her sister Patricia. It was in Boston, while working at Massachusetts General Hospital, that Maureen met the love of her life, Edward. After Maureen and Edward married in 1977, they moved from Boston to San Diego, Baton Rouge, Houston, Boston again, and finally back to San Diego. Edward credits his career success to Maureen’s partnership, support, and willingness to embrace each new opportunity and city that his roles at Stone and Webster took them to.
Though Maureen lived in various cities across the United States, Coronado was the place she truly called home. She and Edward first fell in love with the island while living there for work between 1977 and 1980, and they joyfully returned to retire there permanently in 1997. Despite the miles, Maureen never lost her Irish brogue, and took great pride in participating in the Coronado Lawn Bowling Club's annual St. Patrick's Day tournament. Maureen was a formidable presence on the lawn bowling green. Her competitive spirit was matched only by her generosity and love for those around her.
Maureen leaves behind her devoted husband, Edward Sweeney, her sister Josephine Mullens of Bagenalstown, Ireland, and her brother John Gough, County Meath, Ireland. Maureen was predeceased by her sisters, Patricia Riddle, Delray Beach, Florida, Susan Cane, Malahide, Ireland, Philomena "Rosie" Gough, Bagenalstown, Ireland, Rita Dunn, Dublin, Ireland, and her Brother James Gough of Dublin, Ireland. Maureen also leaves behind cherished nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of loving friends. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for her light, laughter, and boundless love.
A celebration of Maureen’s life will be held Thursday on March 20th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, California with the viewing at 10 AM and service at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Sacred Heart Church (https://sacredheartcor.org)
