Born in Tacoma WA, Maxine spent her childhood in the Pacific Northwest and graduated from Seattle University. After meeting a visiting Naval Officer, Harry Gimber, she fell in love, and they married in June 1960.
Their life together to them first to New London, CT, then frequently across the country to various duty stations as she supported his career, cared for a growing family, lived their Catholic faith, and created friendships with other families that would remain lifelong.
After moving the family across the country with tours in Monterey, Hawaii and Northern Virginia, they settled in San Diego and finally Coronado. Wherever they lived, their home was always welcome to friends and family.
Maxine was an avid skier from her teenager years through her 70's and enjoyed much time on the slopes. She involved herself in activities wherever she lived, from substitute teaching for special education, modeling, to hat making, and volunteering.
Once their children were grown, she worked as a travel agent in Coronado and became a talented watercolorist with friends. She was an original member of the Money Honeys investment club and she and Harry were active in Crown Club. Their love for travel took them to Europe with friends, and hosted family in Hawaii, a special place of meaning for the two of them.
As grandchildren came into their lives, she became affectionately known to all as G.G. (Grandmother Gimber).
Maxine loved all those in her life, kept things simple and easy, lent a helping hand when she could, and always had a loving smile.
She is survived by her loving husband Harry, her children Stuart, Julie (Harman), Jamie (Elizabeth), and her eight cherished grandchildren: Sadie, Christian, Mia, Gabrielle, Ana, Leo, Blaise, and Leila.
A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado on Tuesday, March 4th at 10am with a reception in the parish center immediately after.
Her ashes will be interned on Thursday, March 6th at Miramar National Cemetery at 10:30.
In lieu of flowers please make any donations to Father Joe’s Village.
