Patricia Obenchain, our beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away after a brief illness on May 24, 2025. Pat was born in Oak Park, IL to Edgar and Janet Obenchain, but spent most of her youth in Buffalo, NY. Pat was the second of four children. In 1960, Pat followed her sister Louise from Buffalo to Long Beach, California where she worked as an administrative assistant for Van De Kamp Seafood Company in the marine research division. In 1970, Pat moved to San Diego to work for LMR, Inc., a marine research consulting firm established by several former Van De Kamp marine biologists. Pat worked for LMR until her retirement. Pat settled in the University City area of San Diego in 1985 and lived in the home she purchased there until her death.
Pat loved San Diego, her neighborhood, her friends, and her church and resisted all efforts to convince her to move closer to family. Pat was a great daughter, sister and aunt. She loved hosting her family when they came to visit and loved joining them on family vacations. Pat's faith was very important to her and she was a member of Our Lady of Confidence Catholic Church for over forty years, where she attended mass several days a week and volunteered her time in various church activities. Pat also gave back to her community through various volunteer activities, including tutoring at the local elementary school for many years.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents Edgar and Janet Obenchain, her sister Nancy (Obenchain) La Judice, her brother Tom Obenchain, and her nephew David La Judice. Pat is survived by her sister Louise (Obenchain) Schumock and nine nieces and nephews.
Pat loved life and her life has been a testament to her faith and the love that she graciously shared with her family, friends, and her community. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Confidence, 3131 Governor Drive, San Diego, on August 7, 2025 at 10:30 am preceded by a rosary starting at 10:00 am. Reception immediately following the mass at Our Lady of Confidence. Pat will be laid to rest near her family at New Tacoma Cemetery in University Place, WA.
