March 19, 1925-April 28, 2013
Paul Irvin Neuenswander was born in Moscow, Kansas and passed away at his home in San Diego at the age of 88, with his daughter, Sheryl, by his side. His father was a Methodist minister, and his family lived in 7 little Kansas towns until Paul was drafted into the U.S. Navy during WWII, 5 weeks after graduating high school. In San Diego he met, and was engaged to, Dolores McDonald; and on June 26, 1946 they were married--a union lasting 1 month short of 64 years. The 1st two years of married life they lived in Kansas, relocating to the San Diego in mid 1948 where they’ve lived until her passing.
Paul’s careers have included 4 years as an Aircraft Mechanic while in the Navy; Mechanical Design Engineer on the Atlas and Centaur vehicles for General Dynamics; Administrative Engineer in Management within GD Space programs totaling 26 years at GD; followed by ten years of consulting for NACOM, Linkabit, and SAIC.
He was preceded in death by his son Paul Dean in 2003. Paul is survived by: daughter Janet Richie of La Mesa; son Irvin of Longview, WA; daughter Sheryl Lang of San Diego; 9 Grandchildren; and 18 Great Grandchildren.
Paul will be remembered for his lifelong labors helping men learn about Jesus, one of which was with the San Diego Floating Society of Christian Endeavor from 1948 to 1985. This Society worked with military personnel aboard ships and military facilities performing Christian services while teaching God’s word about Jesus. Paul was also well known for his ability to exegete the scriptures and teach Sunday School classes, Saturday Men’s studies, and lead services at the San Diego Rescue Mission. For Paul it could easily be said “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2Timothy 4:7,8).
From his life with us we have gained much and although in his passing we have lost much, yet so very many rich and lasting memories remain. He taught and knew well the reality of Rom. 8:28 that “all things really do work together for good to those who are committed to Christ.”
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at the Greenwood Mortuary, Sally Lynn Chapel on Imperial Ave near Interstate 805 at 1 PM, Sunday May 5, followed by a time of friends and food at Del Cerro Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Christian Law Enforcement Fellowship (858-486-1926).
