Peeter Willy Voogd, 83, of San Diego, California, passed away on October 17, 2023. He was born to the late Wijnand and Cornelia (ten Boom) Voogd on July 4, 1940, in Jakarta, Indonesia. A private family committal service will be held at El Camino Memorial in Sorrento Valley in San Diego. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.dignitymemorial.com for the Voogd family.
When Peeter was 16 years old, his family moved to the Netherlands, where he briefly served in the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1960 and married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Swensen), in 1961. Shortly after, they arrived in New York, having immigrated to the United States on the S.S. America. After a brief stop in Reedley, California, they relocated and enjoyed their remaining time with family in San Diego. Elizabeth passed away in 2018, and both are survived by their son, Wayne, his wife, Karen (Zawadzki), and grandchildren, Matthew and Jennifer. He was the brother to Ron, Gaby, Ilse, and Oom Peeter to all their wonderful children.
In his 20s and mid-30s, Peeter enjoyed spending time with friends and starting a family. He frequently spent weekends with Elizabeth, attending horse racing at Del Mar and Agua Caliente; in his late 40s, he joined the San Diego Table Tennis Association and was a nationally ranked table tennis player with several local trophies to his credit, including placing 1st in his division in 1987. Peeter also had a talent for sketching characters in ads for Art Instruction, Inc., in the T.V. Guide, and spent downtime doing crossword puzzles and watching boxing, tennis, and game shows. He loved donuts, McDonald’s french fries, and Diet Coke, and disliked spaghetti.
Peeter spent most of his career as a warehouse lead with Sequentia, Acoustical Material Services, and an aircraft assembler with General Dynamics working on the MD-11.
In retirement, he loved being with family and Opa to Matthew and Jennifer, taking walks with Elizabeth, and memorable trips to the Hawaiian Islands, Disney World, Universal Studios, and Cape Canaveral in Orlando, Florida, along with the yearly 4th of July celebrations on Shelter Island and the fireworks show for his birthday.
Peeter was a quiet, kind-hearted, hard-working, generous father, husband, and Opa, and he will be remembered fondly and deeply.
The family prefers a charitable donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) at PCF.org on his behalf. PCF is the world’s leading philanthropic organization dedicated to the research and eradication of prostate cancer. Flowers are also always appreciated.
The family would also like to recognize and thank all the physicians, nurses, aids, and caregivers for their efforts in providing treatment, comfort, and support to Peeter–Grossmont Gardens, Dr. Paul Dato, Dr. Jeffrey Sandler, Dr. Jerrold Glassman, Dr. Jamie Switzer, Scripps Hospital, Perlman Clinic, Laura Carroll, and Connie “Cara” Stenquist.
