

Bob Spelman was born on August 27, 1956 in Jamaica, Queens, New York to Ronald and Joan Spelman. The family moved to La Jolla, California in 1972 and Bob graduated from La Jolla High School in 1974. Bob attended the University of Southern California where he majored in Philosophy and was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity. He graduated from USC in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Following his graduation, Bob began his long and highly successful career in public finance, initially working in his father’s La Jolla-based bond trading firm. In 1982, Bob joined Minneapolis-based Miller & Schroeder Financial, Inc. as an investment banker. He later moved to Kinsell & Associates before starting his own public finance firm, Spelman & Company. His firm specialized in underwriting municipal bond sales for local municipalities and other public agencies.
Bob enjoyed playing the guitar, collecting fine wine and art, and supporting San Diego art and artists. He loved to travel, especially with his longtime friend and companion, Jennifer Hankins. Together, they enjoyed trips to many exotic locales around the world. One of Bob’s favorite pastimes was traveling to various foreign cities to see his beloved Rolling Stones band in concert.
Bob is survived by his parents, Ron and Joan Spelman. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Ronnie Spelman.
