Dr. Rustom Phiroze Dastur, son of the late Dr. Phiroze and Mani Dastur, passed away peacefully in his home in Point Loma on February 12, 2016 at the age of 81. Born and raised in Mumbai, India, Dr. Dastur attended Wilson College, where he was also in the National Cadet Corps. He later attended Sir C.E.M. Dental College and Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. As a dentist in the Indian Army, Dr. Dastur served in the United Nations Organization in the Belgian Congo and the Pakistan borders. He was proud to be a paratrooper in the army and left with the rank of Major to come to the United States.
On September 25, 1966, he married his love and college sweetheart, the late Dr. Soona B. Jahina, and they lived in their beautiful home in Point Loma with their great danes, Rebel and Blue Boy. Dr. Dastur retired from his private practice of dentistry to pursue his interest in the law, attending Thomas Jefferson School of Law, passing the bar exam at the first attempt and swearing in with the California State Bar in June 1998 at the age of 64.
Dr. Dastur, also affectionately known by his family and friends as Rusi, Rusty and Ducky, is survived by his sister in Mumbai, Naju P. Dastur, his sisters-in-law, Dhun B. Jahina, Mehru L. Cama (Lovji) and Gool R. Thakarar (Ramesh), his brothers-in-law, Dr. Rohinton B. Jahina (Mary) and Kaiomarz B. Jahina (Birgit), his six nephews and three nieces. Dr. Dastur will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and ability to engage in interesting conversation with anyone he met. He loved his neighborhood in Point Loma, his five grand-nieces and three grand-nephews, his collection of Mercedes cars and Costco. We thank his close friends and extended family who looked after him and loved him.
A celebration of life service will be on February 26, 2016 from 1pm to 4pm at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home located at 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Operation Smile (http://www.operationsmile.org/act-now/donate-surgeries), a non-profit that provides free surgeries to children with cleft palates and other facial deformities.
