Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sarah Isabel Collado Born March 03, 1921 in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico and died November 24th, 2017 in San Diego, California at the age of 96. Sarah was the youngest child of Josefina Cruz Carballo and Jose Carballo and had 4 siblings, William, Nestor, Mary and Gilbert, all of whom preceded her in death. Sarah spent the first 13 years of her life in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Her mother tragically died in childbirth when she was one-year-old, prompting her father to move to New York to find work. She and her siblings remained behind and were raised in Vega Baja by her grandmother and aunt until age 13, when her father moved the children to New York City. Sarah lived in Spanish Harlem and attended Washington Irving High School, graduating in 1939. After graduation she held many different jobs; a clerk at the shipyards, a seamstress, and a co-owner of a café in Hoboken New Jersey, and all the while engaging in the vibrant world of New York City jazz and dance, of which she was ever-proud to have been a part. In 1950 she met her future husband, Al Collado, a fellow Puerto Rican and classmate of her brother Gilbert, at a birthday party. They married in 1951. After the wedding, Al was deployed to Germany with the US Army. Sarah remained in NY living with two cousins, working until his return. In 1955 Sarah and her husband moved to California. Al got a job with Rockwell International and Sarah was a homemaker. In 1959 they welcomed their first and only son, Daniel Thomas Collado. As her son grew up, they settled in Orange for many years and Sarah volunteered with his school, was a Cub Scout leader, joined the PTA, was active in her Church and planned many memorable family vacations. She especially enjoyed camping. Sarah loved working in her beloved rose garden, cooking, and was very creative – spending time knitting and crocheting gifts for friends and family. She adored her 3 grandchildren and spent as much time with them as she was able. In 2000 Sarah and Al moved to San Diego to be closer to their son Daniel and his family. It was here they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary together. In 2016 her husband Al passed away, after many years of loving and generous caretaking and companionship. Sarah died peacefully on November 24th 2017. She is survived by her loving son Daniel and daughter-in-law Beth, and her three grandchildren: Matthew, John and Katherine. Sarah was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Poway, CA. and will be laid to rest next to her husband Al, on December first, 2017, at El Camino Cemetery in San Diego following funeral services.
