Born on December 30, 1949, Sheila was the sixth of eight children born to Herbert and Angela Westby in Vancouver, Washington. She graduated from the University of Portland (Oregon) in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. There she met Tim O’Malley, her husband of 37 years.
Throughout her early career in banking, imports, sales, and marketing, Sheila’s true passions --- her love of music and her affinity for peace and justice --- continued to flourish. Ultimately she turned to these as her life’s work, leading parish music ministries in Idaho and Oregon, and finally devoting the most recent years of her life to the Ignatian Volunteer Corps in San Diego as a board member, spiritual reflector, and agency volunteer at Catholic Charities’ The Tomorrow Project.
In addition to four brothers and a sister, as well as many nieces and nephews, Sheila is survived by her husband, Tim, and their two sons, Dan and Mike, and Mike’s fiancée, Lauren South.
Sheila’s life will be celebrated at a funeral mass on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at 2:00 pm in The Immaculata Church on the University of San Diego campus. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm in the church. Interment will be scheduled for a later date at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sheila’s memory may be made to the Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC San Diego) at the Bayside Community Center, 2202 Comstock Street, San Diego, CA 92111.
Arrangements under the direction of Goodbody Mortuary, San Diego, CA.
