Susan Nichols Cook passed away peacefully on April 19, 2024, in San Diego, CA, at the age of 81. She is survived by her husband, James Edward Cook. She is also survived by her niece Jennifer Nichols Paredes, her husband Lauro Paredes, and their children Paulina and Lauro Paredes; her nephew Christopher Douglas Nichols, his wife, Jennifer Ruminski Nichols, and their two children Michael and Abigail Nichols.
In addition, her surviving family includes her brother-in-law, Joseph Cook, his wife Sylvia Cook and their daughter Hannah. Also her remaining family includes her sister-in-law, Lois Alderman Nichols.
Susan was preceded in death by her brother Richard Eugene Nichols, Jr., and parents Richard Eugene Nichols, Sr., and Louise Amanda Schulte Nichols.
She was born on April 21, 1942 in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated from Loretto Heights College in Denver, CO, with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later earned a Master of Education degree from San Diego State University.
Susan married James Edward Cook on August 1, 1985, at All Hallows Catholic Church in La Jolla, CA. She worked first as an Elementary School Teacher at St. John of the Cross Catholic School in Lemon Grove, CA, and later as a Special Education Teacher at Grant Elementary School in San Diego.
She was passionate about genealogy and compiled a rich ancestral history, chronicling the German farmers on her mother’s side who arrived in the 1800s along with the occasional gold miner and brewery owner. She even found ancestors on her father’s side who sailed aboard the Mayflower.
During her youth, Susan participated in equestrian riding, played field hockey and later volunteered in the 1960s for Robert Kennedy’s campaign for president. She had a wide range of interests, including gardening, reading, drawing, painting, politics, photography and education.
A graveside service will be held at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, CA.
