Tuoc Van Bui was born August 19, 1928 and raised in a small village in Sa Dec, Vietnam. At eighteen he joined the army. During the years of his service he also collected charity for the building of Buddhist temples in Bien Hoa. After twenty-five years in the military, he retired to Lap Vo, Dong Thap, just before the fall of Saigon. He arrived in America in the winter of 1994 and resided with his six children in San Diego for twenty-six years. He was generous, supportive, and caring and always placed his family before himself, giving unconditional love and guidance to his children and his grandchildren. He valued education, sent all his children to school, and taught them to be good people and to be contributing members of society. He was loyal to the teachings of Buddha, including by helping the poor, and lived in the hope of eternal life after death in the company of Buddha. After a very short illness he passed away in his sleep on December 18, 2020, at home with his wife and children at his side. He will be missed by many for his kindness, generosity, and forgiving nature. On December 24, 2020, his family will attend a private Buddhist prayer ceremony at El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley. His final resting place will be near his parents in Rach Gia, Vietnam.
