Tyler Lewis Hayes

On Sunday, January 24, 2021 the community of Ocean Beach lost one of their own, Tyler Lewis Hayes, to Heaven too soon. His passing was unexpected, leaving the many family and friends who loved him with utter heartbreak. Tyler is survived by his mother Wendy Dunbar, grandmother Eleanor Goodman, uncle Dusty and aunt Carol Best, aunt Marjorie Cray, uncle Bobby Best, aunt Cece Best, cousins Jennifer Cray, Jacqui Best, Micheal Best and Bob Williams, along with the love of his life Ivy Wood and so many friends that he called his family.

Tyler attended Point Loma High School and San Diego City College, holding passions in skating, surfing, listening to music and art. Growing up, you could find Tyler skating to check the surf at the OB pier, eating from local taco shops like Ortiz’s off Voltaire or Nico’s on Newport, trying to land a new trick at the Robb Field Skate Park, and catching a wave anywhere between Dog Beach down Sunset Cliffs to the very end at City Beach.

Tyler moved to Hawaii during grade school, but shortly returned back to the place he had always known to call home, Ocean Beach. No matter where he was in OB, he would get recognized by someone who stopped him to say hello and wanted to spend time with him. His loyalty to his community was so deep that he proudly carried “1502” tattooed on his chest and “Friends are Family” tattooed on his belly. Tyler also had “Ocean Beach” tattooed across both arms, spanning the entire width. When he hugged you, it was as if Ocean Beach itself wrapped around you every time. All those blessed to have known Tyler believed he had a heart of solid gold.

A memorial service will be held in honor of Tyler’s life in the care of Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home in Ocean Beach; the date will be announced shortly.

Find comfort in the Resurrection Prayer to remind yourself that Tyler has not left us forever, as Tyler was a believer in Christ and wore the sign of the cross on a rosary around his neck. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” -John 3:16

The Resurrection Prayer

I am the resurrection and the Life, Saith the Lord: He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die. I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: and though his body be destroyed, yet shall I see GOD: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger. We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. Amen

I was blessed to have shared so many wonderful memories with Tyler; there were times we laughed so hard we cried and other times we cried so hard we laughed. All of them I will cherish forever. Here is a short story about Tyler to hopefully make those reading this laugh...I took Tyler to NY to meet my family in the summer time of 2015 and my Dad and Sharon (Dad’s sweetheart) treated us to lunch at an outdoor restaurant on the Hudson River in Newburgh. When we got there, we headed to the patio bar to grab some drinks while waiting to be seated. The 4 of us are standing at the busy bar trying to order a drink when a gentleman riding a motorized wheelchair pulled up and parked directly on my foot!! This gentleman was not a light fella, quite heavy in fact, and I happened to be wearing flip flops for shoes. So in my reaction to my flattened foot, I hollered, “You’re parked on my foot! Please move!” Yet the gentleman ignored my request and stayed where he was. So I let out a yelp for help to Tyler and my Dad (considering they were the men in my life) and take a guess who moved first to save me? Sharon!! Not Tyler, not my Dad, Sharon did! She instantly bent down and lifted up the gentleman and the whole motor chair; therefore allowing my foot to free from the grasps of the rubber tire burn. Ever since then, it turned into a running joke between Tyler and I that a damsel in distress shouldn’t rely on a man to save them. But Tyler, you did save me. Maybe not in that situation, but you saved me in so many other ways. I’ll always love you and I’ll never forget you.

Tyler was a good friend to Zac. They grew up together and for awhile he lived with us. Now they are both together again, in heaven. Tyler always called and sent texts to see how we were doing after Zac left us. We loved Tyler like our own son. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyler’s family.
