Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mike graduated from the New York Military Academy in 1977 and spent part of his youth growing up within the Nigerian Embassy community in New York. He went on to serve nearly 25 years in the United States Navy as an Independent Duty Corpsman and retired with the distinguished rank of Chief Petty Officer, a testament to his leadership, dedication, and the respect he earned throughout his career.
Throughout his military career, Mike completed numerous deployments, including service aboard the USS Anchorage and as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was among the “Magnificent Seven,” the first seven ships deployed to the Middle East at the start of the Iraq War, and also served multiple deployments during the Gulf War in the 1990s. Mike was immensely proud of his military service and of serving his country with honor.
Through his service in the Navy, Mike developed a deep love for travel and exploration. His career afforded him the opportunity to experience the world, and he cherished the memories he made visiting places such as the Philippines, Thailand, London, Indonesia, Australia, Africa, and many others. Travel broadened his perspective, fueled his curiosity, and became one of the many ways he connected with people and cultures across the globe.
Mike was raised Roman Catholic, a faith that remained meaningful to him throughout his life. His belief in God helped shape his values and guided the way he lived, loved, and served others.
Above all else, Mike’s greatest joy in life was his family, and at the center of that joy was the love he shared with his wife, Karen Anosike. Mike and Karen were married on May 15, 1988, and shared a deep, enduring love until her passing on February 20, 2014. Their marriage was the foundation of his life — a partnership built on devotion, loyalty, laughter, and strength. Caring for Karen through her long battle with multiple sclerosis was one of the greatest acts of love in Mike’s life, and he did so with unwavering dedication. Even after her passing, his love for her never faded, and she remained forever in his heart.
After losing Karen, Mike sought connection and community, eventually finding a second home at JP’s Bar in Tierrasanta, where he spent the last 12 years surrounded by friends who became family. He often referred to JP’s as his version of, “Cheers” a place where he felt supported, welcomed, and loved.
At JP’s, Mike was known for his larger-than-life personality, his quick wit, and his ability to make everyone feel important. For the past five years, he proudly hosted karaoke nights, recently retiring from hosting — one of his favorite hobbies that brought him joy, laughter, and lasting friendships. Music, humor, and connection were at the heart of who he was.
Mike was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and friend, known for his honesty, humor, strength, and unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and cherished every relationship in his life. He loved sharing photos, telling stories, and updating anyone who would listen about their accomplishments, milestones, and everyday moments. Many people felt like they knew his family personally because Mike spoke about them so often — with joy, humor, and unmistakable love. Being a father and grandfather brought him immense happiness, and sharing that happiness with others was simply who he was.
Mike is lovingly remembered by his children, grandchildren, extended family, and his loving partner, Kate, who brought companionship, happiness, and renewed joy into his life in his later years.
