Frank passed away peacefully at home in Mill Valley on December 22, 2022, after a short battle with cancer. He was able to celebrate his 100th birthday with his family at home and on FaceTime. Frank was born in San Francisco Chinatown, November 30, 1922 to Yim Git Low and Lum Shee. He was the #3 child of 7, first to be born in the U.S.
He attended Commodore Stockton Elementary, Francisco Jr. High, Galileo High and then UC Berkeley. He worked in his father’s bespoke shirt factory as a kid, putting on snaps and delivering custom shirts. As an adult he began his 40 year career with Southern Pacific Railroad as a property engineer at One Market, San Francisco.
His enjoyments in life were dancing, bowling, camping, fishing, golfing & lunching with his infamous Wednesday Lunch Group (all childhood friends from Chinatown). He loved the stock market, watching it until his final days. He also loved watching golf, basketball, the 49ers & the SF Giants! He remembered his days as a child at the Chinatown YMCA where they’d take trips across the Bay (before the GG Bridge) on the ferry to camp in Marin. As a result, he supported the YMCA Chinatown throughout his life.
Most of all he enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. In 1952 he married Winifred Wong. This past year they celebrated 70 years together. After trying to buy a house in SF for their growing family where most neighborhoods would not sell to them, they decided to “escape” to Mill Valley, where they were able to buy land and build a house on a very steep hill with a full view of Mt. Tam. Everyday he would commute by Greyhound bus to his office at One Market. As they grew older, it was their request to never move or leave their house. Dad was walking up and down the steep hill to get the mail up to just a couple of years ago.
He leaves his wife, Winifred, children Bryan (Alyssa), Jana (Joe), Jason & Bruce (Becky). Grandchildren Anthony, Alexa, Zoe, Zack and Parker. His brother Ted (Ida) and sister Edith also survive him along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings Gum Hin, Bill, Hazel, Alta and daughter-in-law Alyssa.
Many thanks to his son Jason (who moved in) and daughter Jana, both who took on the caregiving chores the past few years. And many thanks to Hospice by the Bay for their support the last couple of months that made it possible for Dad to pass away peacefully.
He will be missed by many.
