He moved around with his family during his childhood, eventually settling into the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1950's. He attended UC Berkeley, and after receiving his bachelors degree in Mathematics and masters in French, became a computer programmer. He retired after 35 years as senior programmer for UCSF Hospital Information Systems in 1991.
In his retirement, Gary enjoyed solving Sudoku, playing bridge, and writing and editing fiction. He loved collecting books, films, and music, and built an extensive library to suit his eclectic tastes. A resident of the city for over 50 years, Gary passed away in San Francisco on March 7th, 2019. He is preceded in death by his brother Clinton ("Kit"), mother Ruth, and father Dean. He is survived by his brother David and sister-in-law Clorinda, his niece Suzanne, and nephew Amir. A celebration of his life for friends and family was held on March 30th, 2019.
