Hendrick Ngai Hing Wong, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at home in San Francisco on November 26, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on August 3, 1948, in Zhongshan, China, Hendrick built a life defined by laughter, kindness, hard work, and generosity.
After immigrating to the United States, Hendrick graduated from John Adams Adult High School in 1968 and enlisted in the U.S. Army the following year. Serving as a Private First Class with Company A, 1st Battalion, 51st Infantry, 4th Armored Division, he earned multiple honors including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. His motivation, fortitude, dedication, professionalism, and spirit of camaraderie were exemplified when he represented his division as part of the 1970 Nijmegen International Marching Team leading to a commendation from his commanding officer.
Upon completing his service and becoming a U.S. citizen in 1972, Hendrick took pride in learning a trade and building a meaningful career as a carpet, linoleum, and soft tile installer. In January 1989, he was awarded the Collins & Aikman Certified Installer Award for his "skill and dexterity" in his craft. Over the years, his craftsmanship, reliability, and work ethic earned him deep respect in his community and a lifetime membership to The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Union. After decades of devoted work, he retired in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of tireless service and integrity.
Beyond his accomplishments, Hendrick was the life of every gathering — always laughing, sharing stories, and connecting people. A talented athlete and multiple bowling league champion, he also loved fishing in the Delta, having a drink with his buddies, and challenging friends to spirited games of mahjong. He embodied generosity in every sense, always ready to lend a hand, share a meal, or help someone in need.
Hendrick's greatest pride and joy were his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, three sons, and his cherished grandsons. He is also survived by his older brother, younger brother, and younger sister.
Family and friends are invited to honor Hendrick’s life on Thursday, December 18th at 10AM at Green Street Mortuary (649 Green St, San Francisco, CA 94133) in San Francisco. Burial will follow at the Chinese Cemetery (4650 Callan Blvd, Daly City, CA 94015) in Daly City at noon, with a late lunch at 2PM to celebrate his memory at Yee’s Restaurant (1131 Grant Ave, San Francisco, CA 94133).
Hendrick will be remembered for his loving heart, quick wit, infectious smile, and boundless generosity — a man who worked hard, laughed often, and lived fully. His spirit will continue to shine through the countless lives he touched.
