William Richard Sweet

Bill was born to Catherine and George Sweet in Medford, MA and graduated from Melrose High School. The first member of his family to attend college, he graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in history in 1959. He then served for 4 years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, working as a communications officer on the USS Hank during the Cuban missle blockade. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career in banking, beginning at the Bank of Boston, and ultimately as a senior executive at Wells Fargo, and the Union Bank of California. His work at Union Bank of California involved regular travel to Japan, which was a great pleasure for him in his later career.

After retiring from the bank, Bill continued working as a member of the board of directors for the mutual funds of City National Bank while focusing much of his energies on his volunteer activities. He was especially dedicated to his volunteer work with the St. Vincent De Paul Society of Marin County, which concurred with a renewed focus on his Catholic faith.

Throughout the last 16 years, his involvement at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco was the source of great spiritual enrichment for him. Bill died after a brief illness on March 15, 2017.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Hannah Young Sweet; his sons, Andrew (Alexis Sweet)of Darien, CT and Matthew of Seattle, WA; his grandchildren: Madeleine, Nathaniel and Benjamin Sweet; his siblings, George Sweet and Louise Burns, and many beloved nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Ann.

Bill was the definition of a family man. He always put the needs of his extended family and friends before his own. He will be missed for his wit, dedication to those he loved, and his strength of character.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 10:30 AM at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco.
