Robert Michael Gutierrez

Robert was born on Nov. 3, 1953 in San Gabriel, Ca to Martin and Marie Gutierrez. He was baptized at the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in 1954. He graduated from San Gabriel High school in 1971. Robert joined the US Army after high school and was stationed in Europe (Germany) working with tanks. He was promoted to Corporal and was honorably discharged in1976.

Robert and Louella Pauline Lozano were married in 1973 for 6 years. They had 2 children- Robert Christopher and Melissa Marie Gutierrez. In 1977, Robert and his girlfriend Margarita Ybarra-Whalen had their daughter Yvette Gutierrez. Additionally, Robert helped to raise Michelle and Larry Whalen.

Robert had many jobs as a youth including working in a pizza parlor and as a shoe shiner. His cousin Phil helped him get his first 40 hour a week job as a Forklift driver at Continental Carpet Mill in Montebello, Ca. After his military service he, graduated from Rosston school of Hair Design- Barber College, as well as Santa Ana City College Cosmetology program to became a hair stylist. He worked at many salons and eventually owned his own hair salon in Orange County, Ca. He also worked in food services and the drive-in theater where he would take his kids to see free movies.

Robert enjoyed spending time on the Gutierrez family cattle ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico. He was a dedicated father to his children and enjoyed taking them camping, fishing, and attending their sporting events. He enjoyed music, horseracing, and the beach. He settled in Orange County, Ca, bought a home close to the beaches and lived there until 2009. He was an active member of the American Legion and spent a lot of time at the post.

He was preceded in death by his sister Hope, brother Tommy, and Mother Marie Gutierrez.

He is survived by his father Martin Gutierrez, his sisters Alice (Richard) Jackson and Deanna (Tony) Ybarra and by his son Robert Christopher (Sara) Gutierrez and daughters Melissa Marie and Yvette Gutierrez. Robert is also survived by his grandchildren Dalli Anne and Behati Marie Gutierrez, Crystal Gutierrez, Alyssa & Tyler Kroh, as well as, great grandson Bradley Achen.

A funeral mass will be held at 10am on Friday Oct. 7, 2016 at: San Gabriel Mission
