Sorry for the belated response.  

My deepest condolences regarding Dr. Hazard's passing.  He was a very dear gentleman who sent me a wonderful memorial note upon my mother's passing (he was friends with her - Toshiko Winterroth) back in 2003.

He and Alyne were also kind to accept my invitation and present a fantastic kendo demonstration at an Asian American festival for UC Santa Cruz back in 1986.

It was both an honor and pleasure to know him and his family.  Again my deepest sympathies.  May he Rest in Peace.



Dear Malyne and the entire Hazard family,

I was fortunate to meet your father during a kendo tournament when I and my student demonstrated Toyama Ryu swordsmanship.  He called us over afterwards and spoke so wonderfully about our "true" technique -- something I never expected from a senior kendo master.  We were extremely impressed with his kindness and thoughtfulness.

While researching my thesis in 1998 I interviewed your father for over two hours about his military & budo life.   After I get the recording transcribed I will ensure copies are provided to you.

In 1989 Dr. Hazard honored my dojo as Honored Guest during our "First Training of the Year" in January.  We all were impressed with his knowledge and kindness ... My older students fondly recall his visit and enjoyed talking with him afterward.

I will always remember Hazard sensei as a kind and encyclopaedic man who enjoyed sharing his knowledge to those of us who were interested enough to "go to the well."

God bless your father who now has joined his beloved wife. I shall light a candle for them after Mass.

My deepest condolences to the Hazard family.  I am so sorry for your loss. My father was a kendoist as well (there is a photo of my father in your gallery... he is Dr. Gordon Warner, 7-dan Hanshi in Kendo like Hazard-sensei).  I am sure they are both practicing their "suburi" together up above.  I am proud that our lives were connected through our parents who dearly loved martial arts.

Dr. Hazard was instrumental in pioneering the practice of Kyudo in Northern California.  We will always be grateful for his many years of dedication and support.  But we will also remember the many times we shared dinner at Black Angus after class and the warmth and intellect he shared with us over a glass of his favorite Clos du Bois chardonnay.  

Please accept our heartfelt sympathy for your loss.

My life is that much richer and deeper for having had the honor and pleasure of meeting and knowing your father. My fondest memory is in the old days at the Kendo-Naginata dojo at SJSU, practicing kiai by sitting in a circle with our backs to eachother.  Hazard Sensei wanted us to practice our kiai because we just weren't getting it right.  I remember his kiai and can hear him even now as it carries him over to the other side. 
What a life: full of adventure, spirit, determination and most of all - love with his family and friends.
Thank you for letting me partake in a small part of your very special family with your honorable patriarch. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Daian,Alyne,Malyne,Fumi and family,

I'm sorry to hear of Dr.Hazard's passing. I remember meeting him for the first time back in the mid 1970's when he gave an historical talk on Japanese weapons and martial arts, for the local Northern California Japanese Sword Club, which he helped form, well over a decade earlier. I remember Malyne and Alyne participating in his presentation by demonstrating Kendo and Naginata combat, as young teenagers. This memory has stayed with me ever since. A dozen or so years later, when my own daughter was six, I met Malyne again and she helped start her studying Naginata. Some years later Dr. Hazard became my Step Father in law. We were able to share our common interest in Japanese swords and martial arts, and this was always a source of great enjoyment for me. I treasure the knowledge Dr. Hazard shared with me and my family and will miss him.

Dear Alyne, Malyne, and lovely Hazard family all:  You are in the focus of our warmest prayers, intentions, and love.  We already miss our friend and teacher very, very acutely.  As always, I had several things I was going to ask him next time I saw him.  Now we'll have to wait longer.  Meantime, those who have gone on ahead of us are not very far away.  I'm sure they can still see us, and support us from over there.  You will often sense his presence and continued good influence...  so please continue your own family spirit of conviviality and cheer for him to see and feel.  And please accept our deepest condolences and love.

One of the dearest memories we have of my late mother's second husband, Dr. Benjamin Hazard, was sitting at his dining table listening to his many interesting stories about World War II.  We were captivated.  Going out for Italian and French food with him was wonderful too.  We loved visiting him and watching TV with him.  And of course, were so proud of his accomplishments in the Army and in Kendo.  Our entire family's hearts go out to our sisters and their children.

Malyne, Alyne and the Hazard family,

Kurt and I were saddened to learn of your father's passing.  We feel honored to have known him and will always remember him.  My mother still remembers and speaks fondly of Dr. Hazard.  She and my father met him during a Naginata practice in San Jose in 1995 when we were training for the first Naginata World Championship.

Dr. Hazard was a man of many accomplishments and had a distinguished career in the military, in education, and in kendo. His greatest accomplishment was his family - the love and joy of life that he shared with them and imbued in them all. Like ripples in a pond, his influence went out to the edges of his family, their families and friends, and the greater community. What a wonderful life - let us celebrate that! - Cousette Copeland
