Duane was a triple war veteran, having served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, (2) National Defense Service Medals, the WWII Victory Medal and (4) Good Conduct awards. He grew up in Fife Lake, Michigan, the youngest son of Grover B. Lighthiser and Birdie Fern Lighthiser. As a child growing up in the depression era, Duane developed a deep appreciation for supporting others, valuing work and never wasting. These traits extended into everything he did throughout his life.
His success in the military and civilian life as a security guard, can be directly attributed to his work ethic and his natural ability to bond with people and form relationships. His willingness to give to others was legendary and up until his last days provided him with purpose. Duane took great pride in giving and his unforgettable personality always made an impact on those he met and those he visited. He will be missed.
