With profound sadness, we share the news of our father, Edward Kumagai's, passing. After a five-year battle with prostate cancer, he passed away peacefully. His life spanning over nine decades was a testament to his strength, resilience, and unwavering love for his family and friends.
Born in Gilroy, California, to Jack and Kimiye Kumagai, Edward was one of five siblings: Toshi, Mitsu, Barbara Tanaka, and Shirley Shaffer. He served his country with distinction in the Air Force and further pursued his education, graduating from San Jose State University. He was married to his wife Janice for 55 years, her passing in 2019 left a void in his life, yet he carried her memory with him always.
Edward’s life was rich with experiences. He was a devoted fan of the 49ers and Giants, finding joy in cheering them on. He enjoyed watching his favorite crime dramas, particularly "Hawaii Five-0”, "NCIS", “Criminal Minds”, and "FBI”. His love for his family was evident in his many activities. He relished playing poker, fishing, and golfing with family and enjoyed trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno.
He was proud of both of his children who devoted their lives to government service. He shared a special bond with his granddaughters, Tori, Mira, and Laci, showering them with love and attention.
Last year, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Japan, a trip that brought him immense joy. His 90th birthday celebration, attended by nearly 100 friends and family in Japantown, was a testament to the deep connections he cultivated throughout his life.
Edward leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by his children Dean and Lisa; his granddaughters, Tori, Mira, and Laci; and countless friends and family who were touched by his kind heart and charming personality. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for the love and warmth he shared with all who knew him.
Private services will be held at a later date.
