Ikuo Nishimura passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 11, 2016 at the age of 84. He was born on December 22, 1931 to Ichita and Sueko Nishimura in Tokuyama (now Shunan City), Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. He earned his Bachelor in Sociology and Master degree in Buddhist Studies from Ryukoku University of Kyoto, Japan. Starting from 1958, Ikuo was a Buddhist minister at various churches of the Buddhist Churches of America for 40 years starting from San Jose, Portland, OR, Yakima, WA, Parlier, CA, Watsonville, CA and retiring from Penryn, CA in 2001. He was known for using “kamishibai” (paper theater) which is a literary form nowadays uncommon even in Japan.
Ikuo is survived by his wife, Tomie, son, Masahiko, his wife, Jenny, their children, Kate and Kyle and son, Art, his wife, Marisa and their child, Kiara. After retiring from the ministry, he kept himself active by doting on his grandchildren and participating in the church choir.
The funeral will be on November 22, 2016 at 7 pm at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin on 640 North 5th Street, San Jose, CA 95112.
