John was raised in Wichita, Kansas and received a BBA in Accounting from Wichita State University and an MBA from the University of Utah. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, John lived in Texas for several years before moving to California.
John particularly valued staying connected with his friends. When John was in Texas, he went on rafting trips on the Rio Grande River in Big Bend National Park, and that turned into an annual week-long river trip with the self-proclaimed “International River Runners” that continued for the next 20 years. And 50 years after he was stationed in Germany at the Ramstein Air Force Base, he helped organize a reunion with some of his fellow servicemen. The “Ramstein Reunions” have continued over the last 12 years and those men and their wives have remained lifelong friends. John was also an avid golfer and remained a fan of the game long after he was physically unable to play. He enjoyed researching his family history, which included a memorable trip to Ireland with extended family to visit the area where his grandparents once lived. John and his wife shared a love for travel, taking many trips over the years.
John is survived by his wife Pat Culhane (Dr. Patricia Ferrari), his son Michael Culhane, his brother Keith Culhane, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents John F. “Frank” and Eleanor (Moeder) Culhane, sisters Mary Jo Kester and Gwen Welton, and brother Glenn Culhane.
Throughout his 22-year journey with Parkinson’s Disease, John was committed to supporting others facing the same challenge. He was also an active member of a local Parkinson's support group. Donations in his memory may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
