I u duši beskrajan mir pronađen u krilu Sv. Josipa...
a ostavio sam sve što sam mislio.

i vidjet ćeš upornu zraku sunca što para sivilo

da sam sigurno stigao... da ne brineš...

What Jozo meant to our family. 
Being that we are a family of all girls, he was kind of a big deal when he entered ours, the first boy. I was just a little girl when Kaja and Jozo started dating. When he would come over to hang out with Kaja, Slava and I would hide and spy on them, hoping to catch them kissing. Mara was older so Mama would send her along on their dates to "chaperone". They saw all Bruce Lee, Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson movies together among many others.

A few years later Kaja and Jozo  got married and we gained the brother we always wished for. Mama and Tata cherished him as their own son and we sisters loved him as our brother. He was a good big brother, watching out for us and keeping the boys away. When he had something to say, he was direct and honest and not afraid to tell you what he thought. Even though it seemed harsh at times, it was because he truly loved and cared about us. 

As time went on and we all got married and had families of our own, he continued to be a positive influence on our children and a friend to our husbands...a role model of how to put family first, work hard and play hard, because Jozo always had a good time.
Jozo was a friend to everyone and we don’t know anyone who didn’t like him, even when he was being the hard-headed Hercegovac. There was something very likable about him. He accepted and welcomed everyone the way they were.

As we held his hands often in his last days, we admired how big and beautiful they were. Those strong, capable hands helped build all of our homes and I'm sure many of yours as well. Now when we walk through our houses, we can see Jozo in every corner and he will be  forever present in our homes and our hearts. We are grateful that he was a part of our family and very heartbroken that he has left us too soon.

You will always be in our hearts and memories.  We will miss your kind and generous heart, your forgiving nature, your strength of character, singing with you, playing Bela with the guys ("još jednu za sve ili ništa!") Rest in peace until we meet again!

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.


What will stay the most vivid in my memory of Tetak Jozo, will be his smile, his voice and the way he loved my aunt.  Perhaps my most favorite memory of him is from a random Sunday afternoon at their house on Cambridge.  I think Ruza(?) and I came by, probably to lay out by their pool.  Kaja put some music on and made some drinks.  That’s when Jozo started singing, took her by the hand and started dancing with her in the kitchen, the most loving grin on his face.  This was my uncle.  Such a simple moment, but one I look up to, because those are the moments we truly live and enjoy one another.  And it was a moment that showed how beautiful they were as a couple.  I will truly miss admiring this.


When Sime and I got married, we planned our wedding, thought we crossed all our T’s, accounted for every detail…except, at the end of the night, most guests on their way home, we realized we hadn’t thought about how we were getting home (no uber at the time)!  Jozo, happened to be right by us, one of the last men standing (as usual and to our luck!), and he and Kaja drove us home that night.  Not something you’d think much of, but it’s a sweet memory that Sime and I will always have.  A reminder of all the good times we shared together.  We will miss him always.


Ever since Jozo came into our family marrying my older sister Kaja, he instantly became the brother I always wanted. With four of us sisters in the house, as one could imagine, a brother was needed for "ravnoteža".  We often hear that saying that you lose a sister when she gets married, which was true for me and deeply felt for the first couple of years. But my "loss" of a sister was soon outweighed by the gain of a dear brother who looked out for us younger ones and was always kind, generous and fun-loving with his quick-witted jokes.  I looked up to him and felt very grateful that he was apart of our family. There was a sense of security in the bond of their marriage and the world felt right. Throughout the years, Jozo remained a steadfast model of the brother I admired.  An honest and hard working father, his  good heartedness, kind manner, and that big  smile will forever be the image I remember in my heart. All of us are heartbroken losing him so soon.  May God rest his soul.

Singing with my father, Marko, and dear Uncle Jozo.  If I were to take a guess, we were probably belting out some Mate Bulic or Vuco song.  
We will all miss his presence at our many family events.
