"Poem of Praise to the God of my Mother”
(Juliana C. Rabara 1940-2025)
By: Elinel C. Rabara
Blessed be the Lord the God of my mother!
Thou hast counted her amongst thousands of ten thousands sheep
Hence laid her head upon meadows, trees, and greens
Thou hast prepared thine altar in the midst of the wilderness, within the forest of her angst and grief.
Thou hast sheltered her inner man with grace in Thy pavilion
Thou hast polished her skin like precious cornerstones in Thy temple
Thou hast lit her feet like candles within Thy tabernacle of praise
Her hands are like doves sailing to the heavens
Thou hast ordained her amongst the redeemed soaring like flocks of eagles above the heights and peaks!
The stillness of the firmament shines gloriously upon her face
Her countenance is as beryls, amethysts, topaz, and sapphires!
Her blood surges in the well of Jacob, that burst forth springs of living hope and joys- all eternity!
The foes of her soul scattered with Thy fleeting arrows and flaming swords!
Thou hast melted her sores with Thine oil and fire!
Thou vanquished her faults, sith the wind blew them away, harshly! Away, asunder!
Thou hast marked the toil of her scores and years with Thy seal and compassion
Hence, cleansed her wounds in the pool of Bethesda, thence ransomed her debts in Calvary!
The cries and agony of my mother’s sacrifices for me, Thou etched in granites, tablets, marbles, hence stored in Thy firkins and jars!
Thou hast opened wide the mouth of the heavens to utter her name
With blows of flutes and trumpets she’s ushered home with throngs of angels to Thy gates!
Thou hast numbered her as saint among Thy troops and plenty.
Thankworthy, oh Lord my God!
Juliana, hence, a daughter of Zion
A redeemed from the tribe of Israel,
A citizen of the new Jerusalem!
Hitherto yonder
Dwells in the house of many rooms in many many mansions!
Victorious! Amen, amen!
